We wish they were here

All of these players reached great heights despite the absence of a FIFA World Cup on ther Curriculum Vitae. Inevitably, however, we are left to wonder how much brighter their stars might have burned had it not been for this one glaring omission.

The "Wildest Show on Earth".... What a shame!!!

FIFA World Cup has always been illuminated by stars and great entertaining matches. However, there were at least three disgusting moments of all time that give handicap to this so called "the greatest show on Earth". Eventhough the tournament is the world class, the actors are still human beings, who are ordinary people. Sometimes there are out of control and acting like a stupid guy. Through the history of the FIFA World Cup, there are three infamous incidents during the match. They are so called "battle", in which players quarreled on the pitch like in boxing match.

Battle of Berne, 1954

The Battle of Berne took place at the Wankdorfstadion of Berne, the Swiss capital. The game between the 1950 FIFA World Cup runners up Brazil and the favorite "Magical Magyar" Hungary turned into mayhem. This game was expected to be "match of the tournament". But the fact said the opposite situation.
It is believed to be one of the most notorious premier games with its violent tactics, brutal challenges and spiteful petulance of the 20th century.
The English referee, Mr. Arthur Ellis said years later, " thought it was going to be the greatest game I ever saw. But it turned out to be a disgrace."

This is the most recent incident. The last tournament was colored with an infamous, previously expected to be one of the greatest clash in Germany 2006. Two favorites, the Netherlands and Portugal, which met in the Round of 16, left a bitter story as they were more likely street fighters than highly cited professionals. Four red cards and sixteen yellow cards were awarded by the Russian referee Valentin Ivanov.

Bronze Medal Play-offs

The "Super Subs"

It is never a happy story for a footballer being sidelined on the bench. A substitution status will stay longer to warm before the touch line. However, football is a team game. Being part of a starting line-up may not underrate the substitution one. It all depends on the coach's strategy.

A substitution does not mean to be left behind. Moreover, when a player came out of the bench in such a big game as the FIFA World Cup final match.

The FIFA World Cup substitution was not allowed until the 1978 edition in Argentina. Below are those players having opportunities to be the "twelfth man on the pitch".

1970
Antonio Juliano (Italy)
Gianni Rivera (Italy)

1974
Rene van de Kerkhof (Netherlands)
Theo de Jong (Netherlands)

1978
Dick Nanninga (Netherlands)
Omar Larrosa (Argentina)
Rene Houseman (Argentina)
Wim Suurbier (Netherlands)

1982
Alessandro Altobelli (Italy)
Horst Hrubesch (West Germany)
Hansi Mueller (West Germany)
Franco Causio (Italy)

1986
Rudi Voeller (West Germany)
Dieter Hoeness (West Germany)
Marcelo Trobbiani (Argentina)

1990
Pedro Monzon (Argentina)
Gabriel Calderon (Argentina)
Stefan Reuter (West Germany)

1994
Cafu (Brazil)
Luigi Apolloni (Italy)
Alberigo Evani (Italy)
Viola (Brazil)

1998

Denilson (Brazil)
Christophe Dugarry (France)
Edmundo (Brazil)
Patrick Vieira (France)
Alain Boghossian (France)

2002
Oliver Bierhoff (Germany)
Gerald Asamoah (Germany)
Christian Ziege (Germany)
Juninho Paulista (Brazil)
Denilson (Brazil)

2006
Alou Diarra (France)
Daniele De Rossi (Italy)
Vincenzo Iaquinta (Italy)
Alessandro Del Piero (Italy)
David Trezequet (France)
Sylvain Wiltord (France)

Note:
In the 1982 FIFA World Cup final at the Bernabeu, Madrid, Alessandro Altobelli came out to replace Francesco Graziani in the 7th minute after the kick-off. This made him the fastest substitute as well as took Graziani the fastest substituted player. Altobelli scored one of the three Italian goals. He then left the field in the 89th minute for giving Franco Causio chance.
The latest substitute was done by French Raymond Domenech when replacing Thierry Henry with Sylvain Wiltord in the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany.
Of these substitutes, there were three players who put their names on the scoresheet: Altobelli, Hrubesch, and Voeller.

Francisco Varallo, the only Survivor

All but one players pioneering the first ever FIFA World Cup has died. The only remaining person left from the monumental event goes to Francisco Varallo, an Argentine forward. He played Uruguay at the Centenario Stadium, July 30th, 1930, when the Argentine was beaten by the home team.

Varallo, born in La Plata, February 5th, 1910, has already turned 100 years old this year. The "Canoncito" (the little cannon) started his senior career with Gimnasia La Plata (1928-1930) and then moved to Boca Juniors, where he spent nine years of competition. His total professional career is 210 appearances scoring 181 goals.

Varallo's young talent was built in some youth clubs like 12 de Octobre, Estudiantes, and Gimnasia La Plata. He had two times of opportunities to play for the Argentine national team, 1930 and 1933-1937. Varallo had 16 caps and 7 goals.

Titles and honors:
FIFA World Cup runners-up (1930), Primera Division Argentina (1929, 1931, 1934, and 1935), Argentina and South American seasonal top scorrer with 34 goals (1933), FIFA Order of Merit (1994), and the 3rd all time goal scorrers for Boca Juniors.

Caniggia, Argentine Son of the Wind

Once capable of running 100 metres in less than 11 seconds, former Argentina striker Claudio Caniggia deserves his nickname El Hijo del Viento (Son of the Wind). Yet it was on the football pitch rather than the athletics track that the blond flyer put his electrifying speed to use, making a unique mark on the game with his trademark runs, which invariably left opposing defenders trailing in his wake. FIFA.com takes a look back at the Albiceleste speedster’s career at the top and finds out what he has been up to since his retirement.

The best of times

Nurtured in the once-prolific River Plate youth academy, Caniggia burst into the Millonario first team as a fresh-faced 18-year-old in 1985. With his explosive running and intricate dribbling skills, El Pájaro (The Bird), as he was also known back then, was an important squad member of the team that made history in 1986 by winning the league, the Copa Libertadores, the Copa Interamericana and the club’s maiden Intercontinental Cup title.

After making his name with River, Caniggia began the first stage of his European travels with a move to Italy’s Verona in 1988, though his finest spell in calcio would come with Atalanta. After returning home and pulling on the Boca Juniors shirt alongside one Diego Maradona, a move for which River fans would never forgive him, he enjoyed his most productive years in the game.

When asked recently about which of the two sides occupied the bigger place in his heart, he came up with a diplomatic response: “Half and half. River is the better school. They demand attractive football. Boca is different. There the fans keep cheering even when you’re losing.”

However, it was his performances in the national side that would raise Caniggia’s profile and make him one of the country’s leading players. He achieved hero status at the 1990 FIFA World Cup Italy™ when, following a magnificent run by Maradona, he scored the goal that took the Argentina into the last eight at the expense of Brazil. “That was the most important goal of my career, because we were really on the back foot and because of the rivalry we have with them,” he said afterwards.

The subsequent semi-final against the host nation provided yet more landmark moments in Caniggia’s blossoming career. As well as scoring the goal that forced the game into extra time and a penalty shootout that Argentina would go on to win, he also picked up a yellow card for a handball incident, a caution that would rule him out of the Final against Germany. “It was one of the most frustrating moments of my career,” he lamented. “That and failing to win the World Cup.”

The following year he contributed two goals as Argentina won the Copa America in Chile, where he formed a fearsome strike partnership with Gabriel Batistuta, who made the most of his sidekick’s searing pace.

A drugs ban forced him to miss Argentina’s successful defence of their continental title in Ecuador two years later, though he was united once more with Batigol for USA 1994, a tournament at which the Argentinians were expected to feature prominently. Despite Maradona’s suspension from the tournament, Caniggia scored twice against Nigeria in the group phase but limped off through injury against Bulgaria and was forced to look on from the sidelines as Romania ousted the South American champions in the Round of 16. “Another bitter pill,” he later said. “That was a great team.”

Though his differences with Daniel Passarella led to his omission from the France 1998 squad, Marcelo Bielsa recalled him for Korea/Japan 2002. Yet it was an unhappy tournament for Caniggia, who failed to make a single appearance and was sent off from the sub’s bench during the 1-1 draw with Sweden, a result that sealed Argentina’s surprise first-round elimination. Caniggia, who would never play for his country again, brought his lengthy career to an end two years later, having chosen Qatar as his final port of call.

A place in the sun

The much-travelled Argentinian had a very simple reason for choosing Marbella in the south of Spain as his current place of residence. “I used to come here a lot on holiday,” he said recently. “I liked it and when I retired we came here. It’s a quiet, relaxed place for all the family.”

Caniggia still maintains ties with the game. After a year’s rest he started providing his services as a consultant to a number of English clubs. “I’m also working with a few kids but I’m not an agent or anything like that,” he explained. “I’m just helping them out.”

Currently considering a move into management with an Italian club, he is also working on the long-term development of the game in the Marbella region. “This is an interesting place and there’s a real potential for growth here,” he has said of his adopted home. “There are kids here of different nationalities who have a lot of promise and I think we’re on to something.”

From scorer to scout, Claudio Caniggia clearly still has much to offer the football world.
